What Is An STD?

What Is An STD?

An STD is a sexually transmitted disease that may or may not have symptoms associated with it. STD’s are commonly transferred through sexual intercourse. The bacteria are contained in semen, blood, vaginal secretions and sometimes saliva.

According to the Illinois Department of Health, chlamydia and gonorrhea are the two most common STD’s in the state of Illinois. Let’s take a closer look at these STD’s so you can decide if you should schedule an appointment withone of our clinics to get tested.

CHLAMYDIA & GONORRHEA

Like most STD’s, chlamydia & gonorrhea are spread through sexual intercourse. Chlamydia is most common among young women. The majority of individuals with chlamydia or gonorrhea do not experience any symptoms. When left untreated, these STD’s can turn into Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, affecting a woman’s fertility.

At My Future Approved, we recommend STD testing for all of our *pregnant patients. A woman with an untreated STD at the time of her abortion is at an increased risk for developing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. For women intending to continue their pregnancy, the CDC states that an untreated STD can cause serious complications for the woman and the fetus.

Testing at our clinics for chlamydia and gonorrhea is free of charge. *All patients with a positive test are provided with free treatment at the clinic.

If you think you may have an STD consult a women’s clinic or a medical facility, like your local hospital, primary physician or gynecologist. Your most important resource is information.

Call (815) 242-6402 to schedule your free and confidential appointment. Our staff is here to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information so that you can be informed about your options for the future.

*NOTE: At our clinics, we provide STD testing for our patients who have had a positive pregnancy test. If you are not pregnant but are still concerned you may have an STD we are happy to provide you with a referral.
